Andrew Bird and Iron & Wine have teamed up for a long-awaited co-headlining tour, previously postponed by COVID-19, across North America and Europe, with Bird celebrating the release of his newest album, Inside Problems. Saturday night, True West hosted the two folk figureheads in Pioneer Courthouse Square for the first weekend of PDX Live and the third date of the Outside Problems tour.
Patrons filled the Square to every corner for the sold out show. Sam Beam, AKA Iron & Wine, opened the night with a casual, slightly forgetful one-man gig, all smiles and riddled with laughter. Between apologies he delivered his soulfully sandy singing alongside heartfelt hammer-chord slinging.
Beam's sentimental soft-folk pairs like a fine beverage (definitely not wine) with Andrew Bird's romantically-inclined body of work, which Bird showcased in a set leaning heavily on material from the last decade, particularly the latest release. He performed his clever love songs with mastery and elegance set against the backdrop of the Portland cityscape. About two thirds into the performance, Beam joined Bird on stage to play duel efforts of each other's music as well as the Kinks' "Strangers," which eerily spoke to the perceived unity between the two artists. Just before Juneteenth, it was a perfect Pride evening to celebrate partnerships of all kinds.
