Recently, ZZ Ward made her way through Denver, Colorado and presented a stellar performance at the Gothic Theater. The L.A. based artist started her career playing in her fathers blues band at dive bars in Oregon at the young age of 12 years old. The incredible singer/songwriter combines the sounds of blues, pop and hip hop like no other. Last year, before anyone knew who she was, ZZ Ward put out a mixtape with Kendrick Lamar and Kendrick, Fitz & the Tantrums and Freddie Gibbs are on her acclaimed debut album, Til The Casket Drops. She has shared the stage and sold out shows with artists Grace Potter, Gary Clark Jr. and Allen Stone
Walking into ZZ Ward having heard her on multiple studio sessions on the radio earlier that day gave me an idea of what to expect, or so I thought. I heard a humble woman that paid little attention to the vast amount of media that has begun to follow her, but someone that cares solely for the music she creates.
The concert left the crowd and I wanting nothing but more. She gave an amazingly soulful performance after a great couple opening acts. She provided those of us that were less familiar with her music enough of a background to where she was coming from and how she approached each song to create a deeper understanding for each song. While jumping from keyboard, guitar, and harmonica all while being lead vocals she gave a full performance that was a mix of blues, soul and rock and roll.
She sold out the show so quickly that they gave her a bigger venue only to have her sell that one out more quickly than the first! And with good reason, you can feel every emotion that went into each song, leading you through pain and sorrow, but also incredible highs that created a very pleasing concert experience.
ZZ Ward’s soulful blues left the entire crowd feeling musically satiated. I know that I will be waiting for her next show to come through Denver, and for any blues fan that missed out on this, you must see the next ZZ Ward show!
